The following questions may be off assistance.

• Is the Bujinkan effective for Self Defence?
o Yes, as a combative and complete martial art, quality training in the Bujinkan will increase your chances of surviving an extreme self defence situation. Training includes dealing with multiple attackers, armed attackers and the use of improvised weapons. Students also develop the ability to avoid becoming the target of attack(s).

• Is there a spiritual aspect to training?
The Bujinkan like most traditional martial arts does have connections to eastern philosophy and religion. This often involves a balanced study of oneself in order to more fully understand our lives and the outcomes we naturally achieve in life. As Sun Tzu said, “He who knows himself and his enemy will not be imperilled in 100 battles”

• Will I build fitness through training?
Yes! While we do not have a specific fitness aspect to our training, in pursuit of leading a balanced life, regular class will develop a good general level of fitness and flexibility. While it is not essential, many members also find the motivation to begin building their fitness in their own time after they have been training for a period of time.

• How long will it take to get to Black Belt?
Like everything, that all depends on one thing… YOU. Reaching a goal of Black Belt is determined by a number of things, but it basically boils down to the fact that the more frequently you train over an extended period of time, the better you will become and the more likely it is that you will be graded. Some people attain black belt in 3 years, some take much longer. It is of course important to know that training, like life, is about the journey, not the destination. Like everything in life however… it’s all up to you!

• How often do I need to train?
To make positive and noticeable gains, you need to train at least 3 times a week. You will improve if you only train 2 times a week, but it will take much longer to develop your skills. Serious students attend every event and lesson. There are times when the instructors in the dojo have trained for 25+ hours a week for several months and sometimes for more than 100 hours in a single week. This level of training is however a personal choice and not mandatory for all members.

• Is participating in training dangerous?
While injuries are very infrequent and serious injuries virtually non existent, like most physical activities there is a level of risk involved in training. Training involves many techniques that are designed to manipulate and break the body in multiple places, often using the gravity of the earth and the attackers own force and intentions to do so. Where training involves ‘training weapons’ participants are required to wear eye protection for their and other’s safety.

• Is there a minimum age to become a member?
Yes, due to the nature of the training, membership is restricted to people aged 18 years and up.

• Do you use weapons in training?
Yes. Training involves a multitude of ‘safe’ traditional Japanese weapons and also Armour. This increases the student’s ability to deal with extreme self defence situations. This also develops the student’s ability to use (in dire circumstances) the infinite number of improvised weapons and armour that surround us in everyday life.

• What can I practice at home?
After they have a grasped on the basics, many members do practice at home. This training may include things such as practicing break falls and general body movement. It is however essential that members attend training in the Dojo on a regular basis to make sure they develop good habits and movement.

• Do I need to wear a uniform?
Yes, members wear a uniform consisting of a club T-Shirt, martial arts pants and a belt according to their rank. Sometimes training also calls for martial arts jackets to be worn which are used for throws. Various forms of Armour are also used in training.

• Is this martial art suitable for women?
Yes. As the techniques do not rely on the use strength, Bujinkan is perhaps the ideal martial art for women. Not only does it build self confidence and the ability to quickly and effectively neutralize armed attackers, training teaches how to avoid being attacked and how not to be the targeted for attack. The training also enables women to recognise and use their many strengths not often recognised in self defence and martial arts.
